A major heat wave that has hit Mexico since mid-April, the third since the beginning of the year, has killed eight people, the Mexican government said today.
Of the eight victims, seven succumbed to heatstroke and one to dehydration between April 14 and June 12, the government said.
In the capital of Mexico, the temperature reached a record 35 degrees Celsius this Sunday. The air in the city center was suffocating due to the crowds and gas emissions from road traffic and businesses.
In Monterey in the northeast, the temperature exceeded 40 degrees.
In that city, which suffered a severe drought last year, the water pressure in the houses was reduced, and the increased use of electricity for air conditioning led to power outages.
