"Brib-gate" - they say in the USA. It is a play on words, a term that connects "Watergate" - a scandal of scandals, and the word "bribe" (bribe) - or "bribe". It is about the suspicion of corruption of two generations of the Biden family – father Joseph and son Hunter.
Joseph "Joe" Biden, as it is claimed, in 2016, when he was the vice president of the USA, made the payment of financial aid to Ukraine conditional on the resignation of a Ukrainian state prosecutor. Because he is corrupt. It was about Viktor Shokin.
But the fact that Shokin led the investigation against the Ukrainian energy company BURISMA, whose supervisory board included Hunter Biden, the son of the American vice president, is especially piquant.
The Republican senator claims that the audio recordings exist
This is a short version of the story that has been circulating in the public for several years. The news is what Republican Senator Chuck Gresley of Iowa is now claiming. He stated in the US Parliament: "A citizen of a foreign country, who is suspected of bribing the Bidens, apparently secretly recorded 17 audio recordings," Gresley claims. He is referring to the founder of the company BURISMA, Mikola Zločevski. The source for these claims is a secret informant from the FBI: "He wanted to use those records to insure himself in case the matter was discovered," added Gresley.
But what exactly can be heard on those mysterious recordings, assuming they actually exist? During a congressional hearing, Senator Ted Cruz asked FBI Deputy Director Paul Abeyt to find out if the Federal Police really had those recordings? "I cannot comment on the ongoing investigation," was the reply.
Republican congressman James Comer from Kentucky, who is leading the investigation in the House of Representatives of the US Congress, apparently knows something more: "Joe Biden can be heard on two audio recordings, and on the others the then manager of Hunter Biden's BURISMA company." All the conversations, he added, they revolve around the conditions for paying bribes. The Bidens, Komer claims, received five million dollars each.
Trump: "Biden is the most corrupt American president of all time"
Donald Trump, who is currently under a lot of pressure due to the indictment related to the scandal surrounding confidential documents, sees the accusations against Biden as a good chance to divert the public's attention from his own problems. After being re-elected as president, Trump will, as he said last Sunday, appoint a special investigator. And he should deal with the investigation against "the most corrupt American president of all time", that is, the entire "Biden crime family", as the former head of the White House put it.
And while Republican America is intensively dealing with the "Brief-gate" case, the other half of the country in favor of Biden, more or less ignores the topic. At the time, they claim, Biden was actually working in consultation with other nations, including the EU, in pushing for the removal of the state attorney general in Ukraine. All objections against the current president in this matter are a "coordinated action", according to Biden's sympathizers.
Congressman James Comer predicts, however, that this line of defense of Biden will not be able to be maintained for long: "It will be increasingly difficult for Biden to explain it, and at some point the left media will start to question where Biden got the money from."
Komer's Republican Party announces that it will publish the evidence for the alleged million-dollar corruption of the Biden family, i.e. the audio recordings that should support it, as part of the work of the Congressional Investigative Committee.
