South African President Cyril Ramaphosa was acquitted today of charges that caused a scandal, including the theft of more than half a million US dollars, hidden in a sofa on his farm.
The Office of the Public Protector, which holds politicians accountable, said Ramaphosa did not violate South Africa's code of ethics for members of the executive branch over the incident, which took place in 2020 but was not publicly disclosed until last year, AP reports.
The scandal is seen as the biggest challenge to Ramaphosa's presidency of Africa's most developed economy, and a criminal investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
