Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vasiliy Nebenzya called on the US and its allies to refrain from military action against Syria over the alleged chemical weapons attack.
He pointed out that "the urgent priority is to prevent the danger of war", writes B92.
Asked if he was referring to a war between the US and Russia, Nebenzja told reporters that Russia "unfortunately cannot rule out any possibility," reports Reuters.
"We have seen the messages coming from Washington. They are very belligerent," the Russian ambassador pointed out.
He also pointed out that the US knows that Russian forces are deployed in Syria. "The danger of escalation is greater than when it comes to Syria itself, because our army is there... That's why the situation is very dangerous," warned Nebenzja.
He says that it is unthinkable that there will be US strikes on targets in Syria where Russian troops are deployed, Tass reports. Russia, he pointed out, hopes that the "point of no return" will not be reached in Syria.
According to him, even the American threat of a missile attack on Syria is a violation of the UN Charter.
Nebenzja said that Russia is calling for an open session on Syria, with the participation of the UN Secretary General.
