Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov arrived in North Korea today just a few days after the US (United States of America) reported that Pyongyang had transferred military equipment and ammunition to Moscow for its war in Ukraine.
The Russian news agency RIA Novosti released a video showing a large number of people greeting Lavrov in heavy rain in Pyongyang, as well as a welcoming group.
Shortly after his arrival, Lavrov said his visit was an opportunity to discuss the implementation of the agreement that President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un signed when they met at Russia's Vostochny Cosmodrome in September, Russian news agency TASS reported.
Lavrov said Russia highly values North Korea's "principled, unequivocal support for Russian action" in Ukraine.
Earlier this week, Lavrov accompanied Putin on a visit to Beijing that underlined China's support for Russia's war in Ukraine, according to the AP agency. The White House announced on Friday that North Korea has delivered more than 1.000 containers of military equipment and ammunition to Russia. White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said the US believes Kim is seeking to obtain advanced US weapons technology in exchange for ammunition to boost North Korea's military and nuclear programs. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu visited North Korea in July, and Kim visited Russia in September. During the two-day visit, Lavrov is expected to meet with North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui, reports RIA Novosti. Putin has also accepted an invitation to visit North Korea, but it has not yet been announced when.
