In the area of Acapulco in southern Mexico, a "nightmare scenario" is unfolding due to Hurricane Otis, as this storm suddenly strengthened into a Category XNUMX hurricane before making landfall from the Gulf of Mexico, reports the National Weather Service and reports CNN. Ann (CNN).
This development of events - the sudden transformation of Otis into a hurricane of the strongest and most dangerous category - did not give officials and the population enough time to prepare for the disaster and move to safety.
At first, Otis was only a tropical storm, and then just 12 hours before making landfall in the Acapulco resort area, it turned into a category five hurricane.
About 800.000 people live in the city of Acapulco.
"A nightmare scenario is unfolding," announced the National Hurricane Center of the State of Mexico and assessed: "In this part of Mexico, no hurricane of this strength has yet been recorded."
Studies show that sudden strengthening of tropical cyclones, such as Hurricane Otis, is happening more often than before, especially when the storm is approaching land.
This, as stated, is happening due to the warming of the ocean as a result of climate change, caused by human influence.
