Robert Card, suspected of killing 18 people and wounding 13 in the US state of Maine, was found dead 48 hours after opening fire at a bar and bowling alley in Lewiston.
Governor Janet Mills said Card was found dead near Lisbon with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Maine Governor Janet Mills confirmed at a press conference that Robert Card's body was found near the town of Lisbon.
"The long search is over, the police will continue the investigation to determine the truth about what happened," said Janet Mills, adding that "the people of Maine can breathe a sigh of relief and that she has informed US President Joseph Biden and members of Congress."
Roberto Cardo's body was discovered in a forest near the neighboring city of Lisbon, where police found his abandoned vehicle shortly after the mass murder, reports Reuters.
And Lewiston's police chief confirmed that Card was dead.
Several US media outlets, citing unnamed police sources, previously reported that Card had committed suicide with a firearm.
The massacre in Maine is the deadliest of 566 mass shootings in the US this year. With 18 people killed, the mass shooting in Lewiston is also the deadliest since the massacre in Juvalde in May 2022, when 21 people were killed in an elementary school in Texas, RTS reminds.
