A former American diplomat who was also the ambassador to Bolivia was accused of working as a "mole" for the Cuban intelligence service for decades, the US Department of Justice announced.
Newly unsealed court documents allege that Manuel Rocha carried out "covert activities" for the Cuban state since at least 1981, meeting with Cuban intelligence and providing false information to US government officials about his travels and contacts.
In the indictment filed in the Federal Court in Miami, Roca was accused, among other things, of being an illegal agent of a foreign state.
The XNUMX-year-old former diplomat was in the American service for two decades, partly in leading positions in Bolivia, Argentina and the American Interest Department in Havana.
The indictment alleges his illegal ties to Cuban intelligence from 1981, when he joined the State Department, until he left the US federal government two decades later.
The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) found out about it last year and set Rocchi up for a series of secret meetings with someone posing as a Cuban intelligence officer.
One such meeting was in Miami last year when Roča said that the intelligence service instructed him to lead a normal life, and he also told the interlocutor that he was always afraid that someone would betray him because it would "jeopardize everything we did" - stated is in the indictment.
