At least 51 people have died in forest fires in the central and southern parts of Chile, according to the new toll announced today by local authorities.
Firefighters have been putting out dozens of fires since Friday. Between 3.000 and 6.000 houses were damaged or destroyed.
The President of Chile, Gabrijel Boric, who flew over the threatened area in a helicopter, said that it is feared that the number of victims will increase given the "dimension of the tragedy" that devastated 43.000 hectares of forests.
The fire also affected the popular resort of Vinja del Mar, where it is the peak of the summer season and where extremely high temperatures were recorded.
