In a drone attack late Sunday on a base in eastern Syria where American soldiers were stationed, six members of the Kurdish militia were killed, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced today.
The statement blamed "mercenaries supported by the Damascus regime" for the attack on the al-Omar training camp in the eastern Syrian province of Deir el Zour. There were no casualties among American soldiers.
An Iranian-backed organization called the Islamic Resistance in Iraq released a video claiming responsibility for the attack and showing the group launching a drone from an unknown location.
The group has previously carried out dozens of attacks on US bases and soldiers stationed in Iraq and Syria and called for their withdrawal from both countries.
The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least seven SDF fighters were killed and 18 wounded, some seriously, in the attack on Sunday. They did not say whether there were Americans among the victims.
The attack comes as tensions rise across the Middle East over the war between Israel and Hamas.
Just two days earlier, the US military had carried out strikes in Syria and Iraq against militants linked to Iran.
