The death toll in a landslide that hit a gold mine in the southern Philippines has risen to 54, while 63 are still missing, local officials said today.
Tuesday's landslide in the village of Masara in Davao de Oro province on the island of Mindanao in the southern Philippines came after weeks of torrential rains.
The regional government of Davao de Oro province said on Facebook that 54 people were found dead, at least 32 local residents were injured and 63 were missing.
Among the missing are miners who were waiting for buses to take them home when the landslide occurred.
The rescue operation is hampered by bad weather and fears of new landslides.
Officials said over 1.100 families have been relocated to refugee centers for their safety.
People living nearby were ordered to evacuate because of possible new landslides.
Several villages were flooded in the south of the country due to heavy downpours.
