The western part of China was hit by an earthquake measuring 6,6 on the Richter scale today, the American Geological Survey announced, and it is feared that around a hundred people have died.
As reported by AFP, thousands of people were injured.
Based on initial estimates, China's National Emergency Commission said about 130.000 houses were damaged in the earthquake in a remote region of Sichuan province.
The epicenter of the earthquake was 200 kilometers northwest of Guangyuan, Sichuan, and occurred at a depth of 32 kilometers, Reuters reported.
Xinhua reports that the earthquake caused damage to some buildings and that authorities have organized younger people to help evacuate a small number of residents in Jiuzhaigou County.
