The governor of the US state of Florida, Ron DeSantis, signed a law today with the most restrictive ban on access to social networks for minors in the US.
The law, which takes effect on January 1, prohibits minors under the age of 14 from having a social media profile, and those between the ages of 15 and 16 must have a parent or guardian's permission to open one.
The approved law was softened compared to the one previously proposed by DeSantis, which would have prohibited all persons under the age of 16 from having a profile on a social network at all, regardless of parental consent.
Several other states are considering similar laws, but in August a federal judge in Arkansas struck down a law that required parental consent for minors to open social media profiles.
