The journalist of the Arabic service of the Russian news television RT, formerly Rasha Today (Russia Today), was killed today in an attack by jihadists of the Islamic State in the Syrian province of Homs, that television reported.
"RT regrets the loss of its correspondent Khaled Alhateb, who was killed today while covering the operation of the Syrian army against the terrorists of the Islamic State near Suhna in the eastern zones of the province of Homs," the Russian channel said in a statement on its website in Arabic.
That television broadcasts news in Russian, English, Arabic, Spanish and French.
The journalist was killed when jihadists targeted positions of the Syrian army, RT added.
On Friday, Syrian forces captured the town of Suhna, the Islamic State's last stronghold in Homs, from the jihadists, the Syrian opposition Observatory for Human Rights said.
The capture of that city, 70 kilometers away from ancient Palmyra, allows the Syrian army to advance towards the province of Deir Ezzor, which has been predominantly in the hands of jihadists since 2015.
