Four people died yesterday in Houston, in the American state of Texas, in a strong storm that caused major property damage, numerous problems in the energy system and broke trees, the city authorities announced.
"Unfortunately we have four dead," Houston Mayor Don Whitmeyer said in an interview with Fox 26 local television.
He said that major damages were caused to business buildings in the city center, that more than 800.000 families were left without electricity, and he described the storm as "exceptional".
Schools and colleges in the city, which has about 2,4 million inhabitants, will be closed today.
According to local television footage, it can be seen that under strong gusts of wind that reached gusts of up to 160 kilometers per hour, trees and electric poles are falling and windows are breaking on buildings.
