Clashes between Israeli police and demonstrators broke out in Tel Aviv after thousands of people gathered to protest against the government and demands to return hostages held by Hamas in Gaza, writes the Guardian, as reported by N1.
Some protesters in Tel Aviv, the Guardian reports, carried photographs of the female soldiers who appeared in a video earlier in the week showing them shortly after they were abducted during the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel.
Some held banners that read: "Stop the war" and "Help," it said. They asked, writes this media, the government to reach an agreement on the release of dozens of hostages who are still in captivity.
The protesters also demanded the resignation of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and called for new elections, according to the Guardian.
"We all saw the video, we couldn't stay at home after the government abandoned all those people," said Hilit Sagi from the group Women Protest for the Return of All Hostages, the Guardian reports.
Seven people were reportedly arrested at the protest late Saturday, and at least one person was injured, Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported. Protests also took place in other places across the country, including the port of Haifa, the paper said.
