An Egyptian soldier was killed today in an exchange of fire between Israeli soldiers and Egyptian forces near the Rafah border crossing in the south of the Gaza Strip, according to Israeli media.
There were no casualties on the Israeli side, and the Israeli army later said it was in contact with Egypt after an "armed incident" on the Gaza-Egypt border.
"A few hours ago, an armed incident took place on the Egyptian border. The incident is being investigated, a dialogue is being held with the Egyptian side," the army announced.
Foreign media earlier reported that Egyptian border guards had opened fire on Israeli soldiers, citing Arabic-language Al Arabiya TV as reporting the news by a correspondent in Jerusalem.
Allegedly, an exchange of fire broke out and there were wounded.
Israeli TV Channel 13 called the incident unusual, adding that an investigation had been launched.
This happened after yesterday's Israeli attacks on Rafah, in the extreme south of the Gaza Strip, where thousands of displaced Palestinians have taken refuge fleeing the conflict in other parts of the besieged enclave.
In those attacks, when tents with displaced Palestinians were hit, 45 people died, according to the latest information.
The Ministry of Health in Gaza stated that most of the dead were women and children.
An unnamed Israeli military source condemned Egypt for today's deadly exchange of fire on the border. There was no official comment from Cairo.
