A group of United Nations experts has called on UN members to recognize a Palestinian state in order to ensure peace in the Middle East.
Experts, including the UN rapporteur for human rights in the Palestinian territories, Francesco Albaneza, said that all political and diplomatic resources should be used for an urgent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
"The recognition of a Palestinian state is an important recognition of the rights of the Palestinian people and their struggle for freedom and independence," the United Nations website states.
It is added that he recognizes it as a prerequisite for lasting peace in the Middle East.
"A two-state solution is the only internationally agreed path to peace and security for Palestine and Israel and a way out of generational cycles of violence," the UN said.
A week ago, Spain, Ireland and Norway officially recognized a Palestinian state, a move welcomed by UN experts.
Israel condemns the recognition of a Palestinian state, stating that it supports the Palestinian Hamas, which the United States and the European Union consider a terrorist organization.
As of May 28, 2024, the State of Palestine, formally proclaimed by the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) on November 15, 1988, has been recognized by most member states of the United Nations.
