Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced today that his country is "at a very high level of preparedness for any scenario both defensively and offensively", promising to pay very dearly for "any act of aggression from any front".
Netanyahu said this as Israel faces potential Iranian retaliation for the killing of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on Wednesday morning, according to Israeli media.
"Since we eliminated the chief of general staff of Hezbollah (Fouad Shukra) yesterday, today came the final confirmation of the elimination of the chief of general staff of Hamas, Muhammad Deif. Deif was responsible for the terrible massacre on October 7 and also for many murderous acts against the citizens of Israel. He has been for Israel for years was the number one wanted man," Netanyahu said at a briefing with civil defense commanders.
Israel, however, has not officially commented on Haniyeh's death, and Iranian leaders have threatened revenge and Netanyahu said last night that the coming days would be challenging. Israeli leaders have claimed for a long time that Deif, the leader of the military wing of Hamas, was killed in an attack in Gaza, and they immediately claimed responsibility for the killing of the Hezbollah commander on Tuesday in the attack on Beirut.
In April, Iran launched 300 drones and missiles at Israel, the vast majority of which were intercepted, in response to an Israeli strike in Syria that killed several members of Iran's Revolutionary Guard.
