The Palestinian militant group yesterday elected Sinwar, one of its top officials in Gaza who masterminded the October 7 attack on southern Israel, as its leader.
The previous political leader of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, was killed on July 31 in Tehran, in an attack for which Iran blames Israel.
Tensions rose after Haniyeh's murder, and retaliation is expected.
Israel killed an important Hezbollah commander in Lebanon last Sunday.
US President Joseph Biden spoke yesterday with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi about the possibility of a ceasefire agreement to calm tensions in the Middle East.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said over the weekend that Israel is in a "multi-front war" with Iran and movements in the region backed by Tehran.
Gaza, on whose territory the war between Israel and Hamas is taking place, is facing a severe humanitarian crisis. The Hamas Health Ministry claims that the death toll in that territory is approaching 40.000.
