The Ukrainian embassy in Mexico has asked the country's government to arrest Russian President Vladimir Putin if he attends the inauguration of newly elected president Claudia Sheinbaum on October 1.
The embassy said in a statement on August 7 that Kiev is "confident that the Mexican government will comply" with an international warrant for Putin, referring to one issued by the International Criminal Court in March 2023 for alleged war crimes.
The International Criminal Court is demanding the arrest of Putin and Maria Lvova-Belova, Moscow's commissioner for children's rights, on war crimes charges related to the illegal deportation of Ukrainian children, along with the illegal transfer of people to Russia from Ukraine since its February 2022 invasion.
The court stated that Putin and Lvova-Belova were accused of "committing acts directly, together with others and/or through others".
Also, the court considers that Putin did not "properly exercise control over civilian and military subordinates who committed acts or allowed their commission and who were under his effective authority and control, in accordance with the responsibility of the superior".
The Kremlin rejects accusations of forced deportation.
