At least 30 civilians were killed today in separate airstrikes by the US-led international coalition and Syrian government aircraft on territories controlled by Islamic State extremists in Syria, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) announced.

15 civilians, including three children and four women, were killed in coalition attacks on a village near the Islamic State stronghold of Raqqa, the Observatory said.

Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman said that the target of this morning's attacks was the village of Zur Shamar, about 30 kilometers from Raqqa.

The coalition against the Islamic State is supporting an air offensive by Kurdish and Arab fighters who are trying to drive the extremists out of Raqqa.

Somewhat further south, Syrian government forces, aided by their ally Russia, are fighting the Islamic State in the oil-rich province of Dir Ezzor.

The strikes, believed to have been carried out by Russian planes, killed another 15 civilians, mostly children, in the Islamic State-held village, the Observatory said.

Rahman said that members of two families were killed.
