A bus carrying Pakistani pilgrims overturned in Iran, killing 28 passengers, Iranian state media reported on Wednesday.

Among the dead are 11 women and 17 men.

The accident occurred on Tuesday evening in the central Iranian province of Yazd, and the cause was a faulty braking system, Reuters reported, citing a preliminary police investigation.

Another 23 passengers were injured, seven of whom are in critical condition, the provincial director of crisis management told state television.

The pilgrims were on their way to Iraq, for the commemoration of a Shiite saint who died in the 7th century, reports AP.

About two million Shia Muslim pilgrims currently participate in the annual pilgrimage, which stretches for about 80 km from Najaf to Karbala in Iraq.

Iran is known for poor traffic safety, with around 20.000 deaths per year in road accidents.
