Moscow believes that the Syrian government and the opposition could start direct negotiations with a new round in Geneva in September.
This was stated by the permanent representative of Russia at the UN Office and other international organizations in Geneva, Alexei Borodavkin.
Such hopes were also expressed by the special envoy of the UN Secretary General for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, pointing out that it is now possible to motivate all parties to sit down at the table in the same room and start more intensive negotiations, reports Tass.
"I hope that by September the opposition will be able to consolidate a common position, and it should be constructive and aimed at reaching an agreement with the government on all issues," said the Russian diplomat.
If that happens, it will pave the way for direct negotiations already in the next round, Borodavkin concluded.
