Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was safe after what the FBI said was an assassination attempt on Sunday outside Trump's golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Law enforcement officials said at a news conference that they had arrested a suspect who was spotted by U.S. Secret Service agents with an AK-47-style assault rifle outside the Trump National Golf Course.
Secret Service agents fired, and the suspect fled in a black SUV, Reuters reports.
"The FBI is investigating what appears to be an attempted assassination of former President Trump," the agency said in a statement.
Trump was on his golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida when multiple shots were fired, two sources briefed on the incident told Reuters.
The shots were fired outside the field's fence line, sources said. Trump's campaign headquarters said he was safe after the shooting near him, but did not provide details.
The Associated Press reported that US Secret Service agents opened fire after seeing a person with a firearm near Trump's golf course, citing two unnamed law enforcement sources. The Associated Press reported that there were no reports of injuries.
Trump sent an email to his fundraising list saying there was "a shooting near me, but before the rumors get out of hand, I wanted you to hear this first: I'm safe and well," according to an email seen by Trump. Reuters.
Trump was injured in an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania on July 13, raising questions about the candidate's security in the months leading up to the November 5 election.
The White House said in a statement that President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris had been informed of the incident and were relieved to learn that Trump was safe.
