Liz Sherwood-Randall, an adviser at the US Department of Homeland Security, said today that there could be 600 deaths from Hurricane Helena, which hit the Florida Gulf Coast on Thursday night and then moved north.
"The current information we have is that it looks like there could be as many as 600 lives lost," Sherwood-Randall said, adding that the figure has not yet been confirmed.
The death toll has already surpassed 100 in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee and Virginia and is likely to rise.
