The storm system, which is forming in the Gulf of Mexico, is expected to become a tropical storm later today, and forecasters warn that it could turn into a hurricane that will move towards Florida next Sunday.
The tropical depression is located about 340 kilometers northeast of the city of Veracruz, Mexico, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said.
Although no warnings have been issued, the hurricane center said Florida, the Florida Keys, Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula and the northwestern Bahamas should be monitored.
The storm is forecast to strengthen and reach parts of the west coast of Florida next Sunday, with hurricane and storm surge likely to begin on Sunday.
Parts of Florida are expected to see heavy rainfall after that. Rainfall will bring the risk of flooding, along with river overflows.
"An increased risk of dangerous storm-force winds will develop for parts of Florida's west coast beginning Tuesday and into Wednesday. Residents in these areas should follow all advisories from local officials and check for forecast updates," the center said.
