Russian President Vladimir Putin does not plan to congratulate Donald Trump on his expected victory in the US presidential elections, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
"Let's not forget that we are talking about an enemy country that is directly and indirectly involved in the war against our country," he added.
Peskov said that Russia is closely monitoring information about the US election and that it is unlikely that he will make an official assessment until he sees "concrete words and actions", according to CNN.
"We still have to wait, given that the current US president remains in office for almost another month and a half," Peskov said at a regular press conference.
Peskov highlighted "significant statements" by Trump, including what the Kremlin called "his desire to end the current policy of prolonging old wars and starting new ones."
"When he is preparing to enter, or when he has already entered the Oval Office, we recognize that statements sometimes take on a different tone. Therefore, we carefully analyze everything, observe and draw conclusions based on specific words and actions," explained Peskov.
"We have said many times that the US has the ability to help end the conflict. Of course, this cannot be achieved overnight," he added.
When asked if Trump could be offended by the absence of Putin's congratulations, the Kremlin spokesman replied that it is practically impossible for relations to get worse.
"Relations are currently at their lowest historical level," Peskov concluded.
