Tens of thousands of supporters of the leading political party in Bangladesh today demanded elections and quick reforms in the capital Dhaka.
Bangladesh has been under a caretaker government since the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5.
The Nationalist Party of Bangladesh, headed by former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, organized the rally because it is asking the interim government, headed by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, for quick reforms and elections.
The government led by Yunus has not set an election date.
Nationalists originally demanded the election three months after Yunus took power after massive student demonstrations, when Hasina fled the country, ending her 15-year rule.
Nationalist leaders said that the Yunus government should hold elections quickly, instead of staying in power for a long time, but also that ministers should be given a reasonable deadline to implement reforms.
The leader of the Nationalist Party, Tarik Rahman, said today that the interim government must not be allowed to fail because it needs to "establish order in the country".
"The accomplices of the exiled autocrats are still present in the country and abroad, in the administration and administration, actively working to sabotage the interim government. This interim government must not be allowed to fail," said Rahman.
