The newly elected president of the United States of America (USA) Donald Trump said on Sunday that Tom Homan, the former acting director of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), will be in charge of the country's borders in his new administration, writes Reuters.
Homan will be "in charge of our nation's borders ('Border Czar'), including, but not limited to, the southern border, the northern border, all maritime and aviation security," Trump said in a post on the Truth Social platform.
"I have known Tom for a long time, there is no one who controls our borders better."
Homan will be engaged in the "deportation of illegal aliens to their homeland," Trump added.
Homan, who served in the Trump administration for a year and a half during his first term, is also a candidate for homeland security secretary.
Trump made cracking down on illegal immigration a centerpiece of his campaign, promising mass deportations, and frequently praised Homan during the campaign.
The president-elect is meeting with potential candidates to serve in his administration ahead of his inauguration as president on January 20.
CNN reported on Sunday that Trump has offered Republican Rep. Elisa Stefanik the job of US ambassador to the United Nations.
The appointments and policy have already sparked debate among analysts and political commentators, according to Reuters, which points out that the Trump administration is likely to continue a tougher approach to immigration, in line with his campaign promises to make the border "strong and strong."
