John Thune was elected today as the leader of the Republicans in the US Senate and will replace Mitch McConnell, who held the position for 17 years.
Thune, a senator from a fairly traditional Republican stream, defeated Rick Scott, a candidate backed by Trump supporters and billionaire Elon Musk, in a secret ballot.
The election of Tun, who entered the Senate in 2005, ends the era of Mitch McConnell.
In recent years, McConnell has emerged as one of the biggest defenders of US aid to Kiev, forced to fight over it against his Republican Party, which has more isolationist views.
And Tun once supported aid to Ukraine, but did not mention whether he would continue to do so during the Trump administration.
