The newly elected president of the United States of America (USA), Donald Trump, nominated the Republican senator from Florida, Marco Rubio, tonight as the secretary of state in his future administration.
Rubio was once a critic of Trump, but has evolved into one of his staunchest defenders. Now he should become the US foreign minister.
This well-known conservative senator has strong views on China, Cuba and Iran, and was in the inner circle for Trump's vice president this summer. In that battle, writer JD Vance from Ohio emerged victorious.
On Capitol Hill, Rubio is the vice chairman of the US Senate Intelligence Committee. He is also a member of the Senate Committee on International Relations.
He is one of the senators who are looking for a tougher attitude towards China and who are targeting the social network TikTok, because it is owned by a company from China.
Rubio and other senators - both Republican and Democratic - believe that Beijing, given its Chinese ownership, could ask for and obtain data on TikTok users from the company whenever it wants.
"He will be a strong advocate for our nation's interests, a true friend to our allies and a fearless warrior who never backs down from our adversaries," Trump said of Marco Rubio in a statement announcing his choice for secretary of state.
Trump made the announcement while flying back to his native Florida from Washington, where he met with US President Joseph Biden and discussed the handover of power with him.
