The newly elected US President Donald Trump threatened BRICS member countries with 100 percent tariffs if they undermine the dominance of the dollar, while some of these countries are considering not using the dollar in international trade.
"We demand that these countries commit not to create a new BRICS currency, and not to support another currency that would replace the mighty US dollar," Trump wrote on his social network "Truth Social."
He added that otherwise, a 100 percent tariff will be imposed on those countries and "they will say goodbye to selling in the wonderful American economy."
The BRICS group includes nine countries, including Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
This group wants to reduce Western dominance in the world.
In the area of finance, the group considered ways to avoid using the dollar, which serves as the reference currency for global trade. The BRICS countries also considered creating their own common currency.
However, that project, which would entail relinquishing an act of sovereignty within a group of very heterogeneous countries, is still very far from being realized.
During the BRICS summit in Kazan at the end of October, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that at this stage he renounces the creation of a single common currency, judging "that the idea has not yet matured".
