South Korean President Jon Suk Jeol declared a state of emergency today, accusing the opposition of controlling parliament, sympathizing with North Korea and crippling the government with anti-state activities.
Jun made the announcement during a televised address, vowing to "root out pro-North Korean forces and protect the constitutional democratic order."
It was not immediately clear how the steps would affect the country's governance and democracy.
Jun, whose approval ratings have fallen in recent months, has struggled to push his agenda against the will of the opposition-controlled parliament.
June's conservative People Power Party has been at odds with the liberal opposition Democratic Party over the adoption of next year's budget.
He also rejected calls for an independent investigation into the scandal involving his wife and several senior officials.
The Democratic Party reportedly called an emergency meeting of its deputies after June's announcement.
