The Syrian army announced today that it will redeploy in the southern provinces of Deraa and Sueida, because Damascus has, as unofficially announced, lost control over a large part of the territory there.
"Our forces operating in Deraa and Sueida will be redeployed, occupying other positions and establishing a security perimeter as terrorist elements attacked isolated checkpoints," the army said, state media reported.
In Syria, Islamist-led rebels have been making rapid progress in recent days, taking over several key towns from the Syrian army.
At least 370.000 people, mostly women and children, have been displaced due to the fighting in Syria since November 27 and the rapid advance of Islamist groups in that country, UN Secretary General Stefan Dižarik's spokesman said last night.
