Today, Donald Trump Jr. began a private visit to Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, whose purchase or annexation to America in some other way was announced by his father, the newly elected US President, Donald Trump Sr.
However, the Danish authorities announced today that "Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland".
"Greenland is an amazing place, and its people, if and when they become part of our nation, will benefit immensely... Making Greenland great again," US President-elect Donald Trump wrote on his Truth Social social network on Monday.
Almost at the same time, a similar message was left on the X social network by its owner, billionaire Elon Musk, one of Trump's close associates.
Danish Prime Minister Mete Frederiksne, for her part, told the local media that "Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland".
Upon his arrival in Greenland today, Trump Jr. told reporters that he came as a tourist and had no official meetings planned.
Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory seeking sovereignty, remains financially dependent on Copenhagen but attracts other countries for its natural resources. The US has its own military base in Greenland.
"What is worrisome is the way Trump (US president-elect) talks about international relations," Greenland expert Ulrik Pram Gad told AFP.
It is not the first time that the American billionaire has taken an interest in Greenland. He considered buying the island in 2019 during his first term and was already rejected.
"Greenland is ours. We are not for sale and never will be," Greenland Prime Minister Mute Egede wrote on Facebook.
"Most Greenlanders will agree with their prime minister that Greenland is not for sale but open for business," the expert said.
