Several thousand protesters, mostly women, gathered in Washington on Sunday for the People's March to protest the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump, Reuters reports. Many of the women wore pink hats, a symbol of the 2017 Women's March ahead of Trump's first inauguration, which was much larger than today's.
Women disgruntled over Trump's presidential victory in late 2016 flocked to Washington in early 2017 and organized large rallies in cities across the country, creating the basis of a movement that became known as the Women's March, the AP wrote.
The rally in Washington alone attracted more than 500.000 protesters, and millions more took part in marches across the country. The rallies were among the largest single-day demonstrations in US history.
The new protest comes at a time when many progressive voters are feeling exhausted, disappointed and despairing after the election defeat of former Vice President Kamala Harris, and the event "rebranded" as the People's March is intended to attract greater support for this group, writes the AP.
Protesters gathered in a light rain at Franklin Park, one of three locations for the People's March through downtown, Reuters reported. Rallies were also held at two other parks near the White House. The three groups are calling for autonomy, democracy, immigrant rights and local issues in Washington.
Police cars patrolled between the locations.
Protests against Trump's inauguration are much smaller than in 2017, partly because the American women's rights movement disintegrated after Trump defeated Democratic opponent Kamala Harris in November.
"It's truly healing to be here with all of you today in solidarity and togetherness, we are faced with truly horrific extremism," Mini Timaradžu, leader of the group "Reproductive Freedoms for All," told the crowd.
