US President-elect Donald Trump announced today that after taking office on Monday, he will "most likely" grant the social network TikTok a 90-day delay in a potential ban in the United States, Reuters reports.
"Most likely, they'll go for a 90-day extension, because that's appropriate," Trump said in an interview with NBC, adding that "if they decide to do that," he would likely "announce the decision on Monday."
TikTok warned yesterday that it would be forced to shut down on Sunday unless the administration of outgoing President Joseph Biden provides guarantees to companies like Apple and Google that they will not face enforcement measures when the ban on the Chinese platform in the United States takes effect, N1 reports.
The White House has called TikTok's threat to shut down operations in the US on Sunday without new guarantees a "ruse".
"It's a ruse, and we see no other reason for TikTok or other companies to duel in the next few days before the Trump administration takes over on Monday," said White House spokeswoman Karen Jean-Pierre.
She said that the White House's position is clear and that "the steps to enforce the law should fall to the next administration" and therefore "TikTok and other companies should resolve any concerns with them."
The statement came hours after the Supreme Court upheld a law banning TikTok in the United States on national security grounds unless its Chinese parent company ByteDance sells it to an approved American buyer, which the Chinese side continues to refuse.
