Myanmar's military government and the main rebel group from the country's northeast have signed a ceasefire agreement, China, acting as a mediator between the warring parties, announced today.
The agreement came into effect two days ago, and is the second such agreement between the Myanmar military and the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) in just over a year.
No one respected the previous agreement.
The MNDAA holds large swaths of territory along the border with China.
A new ceasefire was brokered by China in the middle of this month, the country's foreign ministry announced.
The terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
China is the most important foreign policy ally of Myanmar's military junta, which came to power in 2021 by overthrowing the elected government led by Aung San Suu Kyi. That overthrow led to massive peaceful protests across the country that escalated into a civil war.
Beijing has major geopolitical and economic interests in Myanmar and is deeply concerned about instability along the border with that country.
