United States President Donald Trump said he would like to avoid imposing tariffs on China, in what appears to be a sharp reversal from his earlier pledges to hit the US's biggest economic rival with heavy import tariffs.
Asked in an interview last night on Fox News whether he could make a deal with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Taiwan and trade, Trump said that "he could do it because the United States has the resources, he has the tariffs," but that he would like not to have to use them.
"We have great power over China, it's tariffs and they don't want them and I would prefer not to have to use them. But it's great power over China," Trump said in an interview.
Upon taking office on Monday, Trump said that 1 percent tariffs on Chinese imports could take effect on February 60. During the election campaign, he said that tariffs could reach XNUMX percent.
China has warned that there are "no winners" in a trade war and pledged to defend its economic interests.
