Qatar reiterated its support for a two-state solution between the Palestinians and Israelis today, following US President Donald Trump's statement that he wants to relocate Gaza residents to Egypt and Jordan.
"Our position has always been clear on the need for the Palestinian people to obtain their rights and the fact that the two-state solution is the only path to be followed for the resolution of the Palestinian issue," said Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari, in response to a journalist's question about the US president's statements.
Trump on Saturday mentioned an idea aimed at resolving the situation in the Gaza Strip, saying he would like to send Palestinians from the small territory to Egypt and Jordan. Yesterday, he reiterated that he wants to see them live without violence, Agence France-Presse reminds.
"We disagree on a number of points with our allies, and not just the US, but we are working closely with them to ensure that we develop a common policy," a Qatari ministry spokesman said.
The country, which has been acting as a mediator between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, which has been waging a war in the Gaza Strip for more than 15 months, is fully engaged with the Trump administration and its envoy Steve Witkoff on issues related to the region and the Palestinians, the spokesman added.
"I don't want to comment on the type of conversations we're having with them right now, but I would say they're very productive," he added.
