US Vice President J.D. Vance will attend a two-day summit on artificial intelligence in Paris next week, his first foreign trip since taking office, a French diplomatic official said.
The so-called "AI for Action Summit" will bring together heads of state, senior government officials, CEOs and other important figures from the technology sector, shaken by the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence technology.
Chinese Vice President Ding Xuexiang is also expected at the summit, which will be co-chaired by French President Emmanuel Macron and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
US President Donald Trump last month spoke of a joint investment of up to $500 billion in artificial intelligence-related infrastructure through a new partnership between OpenAI, Oracle and SoftBank.
Meanwhile, the emergence of Chinese AI model DipSik has stirred up the tech sector, offering companies access to the technology at a significantly lower cost and providing the potential to improve on other AI companies' models and drive down prices.
Vance has previously acknowledged the existence of some harmful applications of artificial intelligence, but expressed concern at a Senate hearing in July that such a preoccupation with the bad aspects could justify some supposedly "preemptive attempts at over-regulation that would, frankly, entrench existing tech giants."
