The US President's office announced that the Associated Press agency has been banned from the Oval Office and Donald Trump's official plane, Air Force One, until further notice, because it refused to call the Gulf of Mexico "the Gulf of America."
A US news agency has been complaining since Tuesday that its journalists are being denied access to White House events because it refuses to use the new name chosen by the Republican president.
"The Associated Press continues to ignore the legal change of geographic name to the Gulf of America," White House Deputy Chief of Staff Taylor Badowicz wrote on X on Friday.
While the First Amendment to the US Constitution on freedom of speech "protects their right to irresponsible and dishonest reporting, it does not guarantee them the privilege of unfettered access to restricted spaces, such as the Oval Office and Air Force One," he stressed.
In the future, these spaces will be open to thousands of journalists, and AP journalists and photographers will continue to have accreditation for the White House complex, he explained.
The AP explained that the decree changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico is only valid in the United States, while Mexico and other countries and international organizations have not recognized it.
"The Associated Press will refer to him by his original name, while acknowledging the new name chosen by Trump," the agency added, as reported by Hina.
