Senior Russian officials will meet with their American counterparts in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, February 18, to discuss a potential meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, the Kremlin said.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has arrived in Riyadh.
As reported by AFP, Trump's push for a quick peace solution in Ukraine is high on the agenda of the talks.
President Vladimir Putin's adviser, Yuri Ushakov, is also traveling to Riyadh to participate in the talks.
The goal is to lay the foundations for negotiations on resolving the Ukrainian conflict and organize a meeting between American and Russian leaders, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
Peskov added that, in addition to the war in Ukraine, Russian-American relations will be discussed.
US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and National Security Advisor Mike Walz will also be present at the meeting in Saudi Arabia.
As stated, this meeting will not be attended by Ukrainian or European representatives.
Russia invaded neighboring Ukraine in February 2022. Russia occupies about a fifth of Ukraine and has demanded that Kiev cede territory and become permanently neutral under any peace agreement.
Ukraine demands that Russia withdraw from the conquered land and wants NATO membership or equivalent security guarantees to prevent Moscow from attacking again.
