United Arab Emirates (UAE) President Mohamed bin Zayed al-Nahyan reiterated today his rejection of the proposal to relocate Palestinians from Gaza, during a meeting with the US Secretary of State in Abu Dhabi, the official Emirates News Agency reported.
The US Secretary of State made a brief visit to the Emirates as part of his first Middle East tour before leaving the region. He previously visited Israel and Saudi Arabia.
During the meeting with Rubia, Mohamed bin Zayed al-Nahyan "highlighted the UAE's firm position in rejecting any attempt to relocate the Palestinian people from their land," the Vam agency reported.
He spoke of "the need to link the reconstruction of Gaza to a path that will lead to a global and lasting peace based on a two-state solution, Israeli and Palestinian, living side by side," the agency added.
The US Secretary of State arrived in Abu Dhabi this morning from Riyadh, where a summit of leaders of the six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states, as well as Egypt and Jordan, is planned for Friday, during which they are expected to respond to US President Donald Trump's proposal regarding the displacement of the Gaza Strip.
Washington, which rejects any future role for the Palestinian Hamas, has called on Arab countries, which are firmly opposed to his proposal to relocate Palestinians from Gaza, to propose alternatives to the US president's plan.
Trump proposed placing the war-torn Gaza Strip under US control and relocating its 2,4 million residents, mostly to Jordan and Egypt.
Rubio spoke with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Saudi Arabia on Monday and stressed the importance of reaching an agreement on Gaza that would contribute to regional security.
On Sunday, during the first leg of his Middle East tour in Jerusalem, Rubio gave strong US support to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, giving him a de facto free hand over the Gaza Strip, where the first phase of a fragile ceasefire took effect on January 19.
