Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said today that Mexico will respond with countermeasures – by imposing tariffs on American goods – in response to the 25% tariff imposed by the United States.
Sheinbaum announced that the list of products on which Mexico will impose tariffs will be announced on Sunday at a public event in the central square of Mexico City, perhaps indicating that Mexico still harbors hopes for a de-escalation of the trade conflict initiated by US President Donald Trump, the AP reports.
"There is no motive, reason or justification for this (America's) decision, which will negatively impact our citizens and our nation," Sheinbaum said.
Tariffs that US President Donald Trump has long announced on goods from Canada, Mexico and China came into effect today.
As of midnight, products from Canada and Mexico will be subject to a 25% tariff, while Canadian energy products will be taxed with an additional 10% tariff.
The 10% tariff on imports from China, previously imposed by Trump, has been doubled to 20% as of today. China immediately announced additional tariffs on key American agricultural products.
