US President Donald Trump has threatened Canada with further escalation of the trade war after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced retaliatory tariffs on US goods yesterday.
Trump's 25 percent tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada took effect on Tuesday, prompting Trudeau to impose countermeasures worth more than $100 billion, which will take effect in 21 days.
The US president responded to this move on his social media account, Trut Soušal.
"Please explain to Governor Trudeau, of Canada, that when he imposes tariffs on the US in retaliation, our reciprocal tariffs will immediately increase by the same amount," Trump wrote.
He has repeatedly referred to the Canadian prime minister as the "governor" of Canada in recent weeks, while also advocating the idea of the country becoming a U.S. state.
Trudeau said yesterday that US President Donald Trump's goal is to "destroy the Canadian economy" so he can then "annex" the country, Beta reported.

The outgoing Canadian prime minister added that he does not know what kind of negotiations Canada could begin with the US.
According to him, the excuse about fentanyl smuggling, which the US president put forward to justify the introduction of tariffs, is "completely false and unjustified."
"It will be difficult and it will hit Canada hard, but the country will not back down," Trudeau added, promising Canada's victory in the face of Trump's decision, which he described as "stupid."
Addressing the Americans, Trudeau reiterated that the "trade war" was solely the will of Washington.
