The center-right opposition has won the parliamentary elections in Greenland, the official results of a vote that took place in the shadow of statements by US President Donald Trump, who wants the US to annex the island.
According to the latest results published today, the Demokraatit party won 29,9 percent of the vote, three times more than in the previous elections in 2021.
The nationalists of the Naleraq party, which is most active in pushing for the territory to sever its remaining ties with Copenhagen, came in second with 24,5 percent of the vote.
The campaign featured a lot of talk about health, education, the economy and future ties with Denmark, which continues to exercise sovereign functions on the island.
Almost 90 percent of Greenlanders regret that Denmark, a former colonial power, has historically treated them as second-class citizens.
Like the vast majority of the population, all of Greenland's major parties want independence, but they differ in the order of steps along the way.
Despite the new US administration's insistence on taking over Greenland, officials have warned that the island's residents, who want independence, will not want to be either Danes or Americans.
