US President Donald Trump expressed hope on Monday that his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin would accept a proposed ceasefire in the conflict in Ukraine, but remained vague about the pressure he might put on him.
Trump said US negotiators were traveling to Russia "immediately" to try to get a green light for a proposal for a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine, which a US delegation discussed with Kiev in Saudi Arabia.
"People are on their way to Russia right now," Trump said during a meeting with Irish Prime Minister Michael Martin.
Trump said on Tuesday that he would speak directly with the Russian president, likely this week.
Asked what he could do to convince Russia to accept the ceasefire proposal, the US president remained vague.
"There are things I can do that would not be pleasant. Financially I can do things that would be very bad for Russia. I don't want to do that because I want peace," Trump added.
