More than half of Americans, including one in four Republicans, believe President Donald Trump is "too close" to Russia, a new Reuters/Ipsos poll found.
The two-day poll, which ended on Wednesday, also showed little support among Americans for Trump's expansionist agenda, as the Republican president talks about taking over Greenland, Canada and the Panama Canal.
About 56 percent of respondents, including 89 percent of Democrats and 27 percent of Republicans, agreed with the statement that Trump is too close to Moscow. A total of 40 percent of respondents disagreed with the statement, while XNUMX percent did not answer the question, Reuters reported.
Trump has turned American foreign policy upside down since the start of his second term. His administration has proposed a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia, to which the Kremlin has reacted with restraint. The American shift toward Russia has rattled U.S. allies, fueling debates in Europe about whether U.S. allies there should plan for their own defense without relying on Washington's help.
Trump says his stance is necessary to end the war, which he campaigned on to achieve on his first day in office. The Reuters/Ipsos poll also found that many Americans support a key part of his transactional approach to providing aid to Ukraine.
Nearly half, or 44 percent, of respondents said they supported Trump's plan to "condition U.S. military aid to Ukraine on the U.S. receiving a share of Ukraine's mineral wealth." Two-thirds of Republicans supported the idea, as did one in five Democrats.
Overall, Trump's approval rating has remained steady in recent weeks at 44 percent - higher than he or Democratic President Joe Biden enjoyed for much of their last terms.
